Confidentiality & Privacy Policy
The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions include:
- Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, which I am required by law to report to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
- If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are mandated by law in order to ensure their safety.
I understand and agree that:
Complete confidentiality over the telephone or internet cannot be guaranteed because it is possible that e-mails and other transmissions can be intercepted by a third party. I make every reasonable effort to ensure all services and documentation are kept confidential. There are some exceptions to confidentiality. Confidentiality may be breached under the following circumstances: the client reports feeling actively suicidal or homicidal with plan and intent to harm self or others; the client reports instances of child abuse or elder abuse. In these cases, law enforcement, child protection or elder protection services will be contacted. Confidentiality may also be breached if a court issues a subpoena for records or in the case of this therapist being sued by client. Sexual intimacy is never appropriate in the counseling relationship and should be reported immediately.
